CONNECT
I'm James Alexander Barnett, an experienced cinematographer/director of photography hailing from the West Midlands. With nearly 18 years in the television, film, and video industry, I specialise in shooting, music videos, documentaries, and independent narrative film.
Since earning my BA Hons 2.1 in Digital Media, I've had the privilege of collaborating with exceptional clients, helping them bring their visions to life. Among them are renowned names such as Sony Pictures Online, Vertigo Films, Jaguar, GoPro, BBC, TEDx, Horse & Country TV, The National Lottery, Ben & Jerry’s, and TikTok, to name a few.
I've been freelancing since 2006, which has given me a diverse background in filmmaking. This breadth of experience has provided invaluable insight into the entire production process, enhancing my skills as a cinematographer and image-maker.
My passion lies in crafting visually stunning images that enrich the atmosphere and storytelling process. While I revel in the technical aspects of filmmaking, I recognise that light is our most potent tool for creating mood and captivating imagery. Continuously drawing inspiration from my surroundings, I'm committed to exploring innovative ways of harnessing light creatively.
Equipped with an extensive array of production equipment, I'm equally adept at working with a variety of cameras, including Arri Alexa's, Sony, Blackmagic Camera Systems, and Red Digital Cinema Cameras.
In 2022, I accomplished significant milestones in my career. I completed my debut feature film titled "Revolution X," directed by Matthew Philip Cannon, which secured a distribution deal in North America and Canada, marking a pivotal achievement in my journey as a cinematographer. Additionally, I had the privilege of serving as one of the main camera operators in the music documentary "King Rocker," directed by Michael Cumming (renowned for his work on "Brass Eye"). The documentary has garnered acclaim, with esteemed critic Mark Kermode hailing it as one of his all-time favourite rock documentaries.
In recognition of my achievements, I was accepted into the BAFTA Connect programme. This prestigious initiative by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) reflects my promising career trajectory, advocacy for creative talent, and commitment to inclusive industry practices. Through tailored workshops, events, networking, and conferences, I'll further develop my craft and understanding of industry best practices.
Looking ahead, I'm actively seeking opportunities to delve into more craft-based projects and collaborate with larger crews. Renowned for my personable demeanour and ability to remain composed under pressure, I take pride in realising the director's vision and achieving project goals seamlessly.
